What is OMT?
Orofacial myofunctional therapy is a specialized neuromuscular program designed to retrain the muscles of the lips, tongue, cheeks, and jaw. This technique retrains long‑standing muscle habits in the tongue, lips, face, and throat so breathing, swallowing, and jaw function work more efficiently. Here is how Orofacial myofunctional therapy can help:
1. Breathing and sleep
- Many adults mouth‑breathe, snore, or have sleep‑disordered breathing (including mild obstructive sleep apnea).
- Myofunctional exercises strengthen and coordinate the tongue and throat muscles and encourage nasal breathing, which can reduce snoring, lessen airway collapse at night, and improve sleep quality and daytime energy.
2. Jaw comfort and TMJ issues
- If the tongue sits low or pushes on the teeth, other muscles in the jaw, face, neck, and shoulders often overwork to compensate.
- Therapy trains a more stable tongue position and more balanced muscle use, which can ease jaw tension, TMJ pain, headaches, and facial tightness.
3. Orthodontic stability and bite
- Adults who had braces (or are in Invisalign now) can relapse if they still have tongue thrust, open‑mouth posture, or poor swallowing patterns.
- Myofunctional therapy addresses those underlying habits, helping teeth stay in their corrected positions and sometimes reducing the need for retreatment.
4. Speech and swallowing efficiency
- Some adults have subtle speech distortions (for example, on “s” or “th”) or inefficient swallowing that come from tongue or lip posture rather than a pure “speech” problem.
- By changing tongue rest position and movement patterns, myofunctional therapy can support clearer articulation and more comfortable swallowing; sometimes this is combined with speech therapy if needed.
- A reverse swallow pattern is when the tongue moves forward toward or between the teeth during a swallow instead of pressing up against the roof of the mouth and moving food/liquid up and back. Myofunctional therapy helps by retraining the tongue and facial muscles so they use a proper swallow pattern instead.
5. Appearance and posture
- Chronic mouth‑breathing and poor oral posture can contribute to a longer‑looking face, recessed chin, or “tired” facial appearance over many years.
- Improving tongue posture, lip seal, and nasal breathing can gently influence facial tone and even body posture (neck and upper back) and often boosts confidence because the person feels and looks more “open” and relaxed.

The Idaho Speech And Swallow Services was the only one who could resolve swallowing issues in one of my family members. Cammy Lawlor, who is the speech pathologist, is the best educated speech pathologist we have run into after encountering several of them after a hospitalization. I highly recommend her as she is very knowledgeable, professional, and personable. Don’t give up hope if you have swallowing issues. I’m sure Cammy will be able to help you!

Finding Cammy was a blessing. My husband was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s and we needed someone that worked with Parkinson’s patients and the speak out program. Cammy was able to connect with my husband and help increase his volume, slow his speech and make him more aware as he spoke. The lessons were invaluable. She is very connected to the Parkinson’s community and has been helpful with advice and resources. We love her!!! Best decision ever.

Our client was referred to Cammy after we had little success using another speech and swallow service through the hospital. Our client had reservations of trying again but Cammy put their fears at ease almost instantly. She was wonderful! Very knowledgeable, very thorough and tailored her treatment to the clients specific needs. As a Care Manager for a non-profit with multiple clients we will definitely be requesting her again and again! Absolutely amazing service!

Cammy is amazing at her profession. So in tune with her patients. She definitely goes above and beyond any other therapist(s) I have been to. I had 2 cervical spine fusion surgeries, 6 months apart. My post surgical repercussions included: my throat, swallowing, esophagus, larynx, vocal cords, the function of my hyoid bone, epiglottis, severe nerve and muscle damage etc. I am still recovering but I have tons of hope because of her treatment to and for me.I hope I got this right :)Thank goodness for you Cammy!
